The Cabin in the Woods Review: Does Horror Have to Be Scary?

Three of us enjoyed The Cabin in the Woods. Our regular slasher fan wasn’t sold. Does horror have to be scary? Our spoiler review turns into an argument about monsters, comedy, and whether we’re judging the movie we watched or the movie we wanted. ⚠️ Full spoilers for The Cabin in the Woods (2012), including the twist and the ending. For Episode 16, the first of our October Spooky Specials, Jayson, Jared, Chris, and Alex take on the horror comedy that turns every cabin slasher cliché into an office job. Chris calls it one of his favorite horror movies. Jayson expected to hate it and got surprised. Jared wanted a more focused, serious horror movie. Alex questions whether that means wanting a different movie altogether. Also in this one: the merman payoff, a monster named Kevin, the Sigourney Weaver cameo, why you should never build your control room next to the monsters, and Jayson's old video store.
