In World Sailing case 10, a boat hails another boat to windward of them for room to tack while they approach a third boat on the opposite tack. The boat that was hailed immediately tacks and protests the hailing boat. Which of the boats broke a rule? Note: this video was recorded against the 2021-2024 rules. The answer is unchanged under the 2025-2028 rules: a boat that hails when they are neither approaching an obstruction nor sailing close-hauled or above breaks rule 20.1, and the hailed boat must still respond. One thing did change: Rule 20.1 now specifies the words of the hail, which must be "Room to tack". The 2021-2024 rule only said a boat may hail for room to tack, without prescribing the wording.
