The LeTourneau L-2350 was built to do what almost no other wheel loader could: move enormous amounts of material, fill ultra-class haul trucks in fewer passes, and carry nearly 588,000 pounds of machine on just four tires. But becoming the biggest earth mover ever built came with a price. Those massive tires could cost around $167,000 each. Front tires were rated for as little as 6,000 hours. At one point, demand for giant mining tires became so extreme that some factories could produce only one per day. And when a machine this specialized goes down, the trucks, workers, maintenance crews, and mine schedules built around it can feel the consequences. In this video, we break down the story of the LeTourneau L-2350—from its 2,300-horsepower diesel-electric drivetrain and enormous 53-cubic-yard bucket to the tire shortages, maintenance demands, fuel costs, and operational compromises that came with building a loader this huge.
