Why do many Pakistani dairy farmers avoid bathing a cow or buffalo immediately after calving? Is this practice based on a real risk, or is it simply a traditional practice? In this video, we discuss post-calving bathing of cows and buffaloes in a practical way, especially for local dairy farmers in Pakistan. After calving, the cow or buffalo is tired and going through an important postpartum recovery period. Therefore, bathing should depend on the animal’s condition, weather, water temperature and farm environment rather than following one rule for every animal. 🐄 Should We Bathe the Cow or Buffalo After Calving? There is generally no need to give a full bath immediately after normal calving. If the animal is healthy, the weather is warm and there is a genuine need to clean the animal, gentle washing can be done with clean, non-cold water, followed by proper drying. However, if the animal is weak, exhausted, shivering, has had difficult calving, has significant blood loss, or the weather is cold, unnecessary bathing should be avoided. 🇵🇰 Why Do Pakistani Farmers Usually Avoid Bathing After Calving? Many local farmers believe that bathing immediately after calving can make the animal weak or cause illness. The practical reason behind this traditional caution is that a freshly calved animal may already be physically stressed and exhausted. Exposure to cold water, cold weather, wind or a wet environment can increase cold stress and discomfort. So the important point is not that water itself is always harmful. The bigger concern is cold stress, prolonged wetness, poor drying and exposing a weak animal to an unsuitable environment. ✅ Possible Benefits of Bathing When conditions are appropriate, bathing or cleaning can: • Remove blood, manure, mud and other contamination from the body. • Improve general hygiene. • Keep the hindquarters and perineal area cleaner. • Provide cooling during very hot weather when done appropriately. • Improve comfort and cleanliness of the animal. But bathing should not be considered a treatment for retained placenta, metritis or delayed uterine involution. ⚠️ When Should We Avoid Bathing? Avoid unnecessary full-body bathing when: • The weather is cold. • Cold water is being used. • The animal is weak or exhausted. • The animal is shivering. • Calving was difficult or prolonged. • The animal has significant blood loss. • There is no suitable dry and warm place for the animal afterwards. • The floor is slippery and there is a risk of injury. 🐮 What About the Newborn Calf? The calf needs even more attention immediately after birth. Dry the calf properly, keep it warm and clean, disinfect the navel appropriately, and make sure it receives adequate high-quality colostrum as soon as possible. Do not unnecessarily wash a newborn calf and leave it wet, especially during cold weather. The main priority is drying, warmth, colostrum and clean housing. ⭐ Bottom Line for Farmers Normal healthy cow/buffalo + warm weather + proper cleaning and drying = bathing can be considered when needed. Weak animal + cold weather + cold water + poor drying = avoid unnecessary bathing. So, the traditional advice of Pakistani farmers to avoid bathing immediately after calving has a practical basis in avoiding cold stress, but it does not mean that a cow or buffalo can never be washed after giving birth. The decision should be based on the animal’s health, weather conditions and proper farm management.
