Some places help you hear yourself again. Anacapa is one of those places for me. Away from the usual noise, I can sit with the sound of the water and feel my thoughts slow down. The waves have a rhythm that feels almost physical, like something moving through my veins. I come back with more energy to face whatever is waiting for me. I spend a lot of time working through problems in mathematics and machine learning. Sometimes I can stare at an equation or an algorithm for hours and get nowhere. Stepping away doesn’t solve it for me, but it gives me room to return with a clearer mind. That’s the feeling behind this piece. I wanted the guitar to move like the water: a note appears, changes shape, fades, and leaves something behind. There’s darkness in the sound, but there’s peace in it too. I called it “Anacapa” because that island reminds me that I can pause, breathe, and begin again. I played my Godin ACS Nylon SA Extreme Koa HG through the Neural DSP Nano Cortex, Meris Mercury X and LVX, and Red Panda Particle. The pedals are powered by a Walrus Audio Canvas Power 8. I used an Apollo Twin X and Allen & Heath CQ-18T in my audio setup, and filmed with a Sony FX3 and Sony GM 35mm lens. Where do you go when you need to clear your mind?
