Hybrid Anamorphic Lenses – DZOfilm ARCANA – Review & Comparison

Today we're gonna have a look at the innovative Arcana lenses from DZOFilm. These are 1.5x anamorphic lenses and that means you can use the full 3:2 of a full frame sensor to get to CinemaScope. But they also have an oval iris creating 2x anamorphic bokeh. Usually, a squeeze of 1.5x means muted waterfall bokeh, but the arcana sport an elliptical aperture that gives you the intense oval Bokeh of classic 2x Anamorphic lenses without introducing the optical defects that come with a stronger squeeze factor. The Arcana preserve the advantages of spherical lenses like a better close focus, less aberrations, compact size, and lower cost – the very similar weight and identical dimension make the Arcana even gimbal friendly. We got the Arcana into the studio and on a URSA Cine 12K to explore how they look wide open and closed down, how they flare and what the close focus means in practical terms. We will also compare them against real 2x anamorphic lenses like the Atlas Orion and DZOFilms own Pavo lenses… can the Arcana deliver the best from both world making the concept of a Hybrid anamorphic lens a valid one?
