What if menopause isn’t simply something women have to endure, but the beginning of a more confident, grounded, and empowered stage of life? In this episode of Midlife & Beyond Conversations, I’m joined by writer, entrepreneur and health educator Kate Magic, author of The Empowered Woman. We talk about menopause and post-menopause, women’s health, ageing and why so much conventional wellness advice fails to take account of the way women’s bodies and lives actually work. We also explore the patriarchal systems that have shaped women’s working lives, healthcare and economic independence, often in ways we barely notice. Kate argues that many of the structures we take for granted were simply not designed around women’s bodies, cycles or caring responsibilities. We discuss what that means for women today, and whether those systems are finally beginning to change. And we look at menopause from a very different perspective: not simply as a collection of symptoms or something to get through, but as a rite of passage into a potentially freer, steadier and more self-directed stage of life. We discuss: • Why women may need a different approach to health and wellbeing • Perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause • How patriarchal systems have shaped women’s lives and health • Women, unpaid labour and financial independence • Whether the patriarchy really is in its final throes • Why midlife can bring greater confidence and freedom • The value and wisdom of older women • The freedom of the empty nest • Sleep and rest after menopause • Why we should talk much more about the good things that can happen after menopause If you’re navigating midlife, menopause or life after 50 and wondering what happens next, I hope this conversation offers a thought-provoking and much more hopeful – perspective. 📚 My book, Ageing Wonderfully Well: The Good News about Midlife and Growing Older https://geni.us/AgeingWonderfullyWell Find Kate Magic: https://katemagic.com/ The Empowered Woman: https://geni.us/OCmk Other books Kate mentions: The Change: Women, Ageing and the Menopause by Germaine Greer: https://geni.us/vlpAB Hags by Victoria Smith: https://geni.us/2sAjAA Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez: https://geni.us/acRCwst Subscribe to Midlife & Beyond Conversations for thoughtful conversations about positive ageing, menopause, health, confidence, reinvention and living well in the second half of life. #Menopause #PostMenopause #WomenOver50 Chapters 00:00 Meet Kate Magic 00:28 Why women need a different approach to health 02:56 Has wellness become another consumer industry? 04:50 What our bodies may be trying to tell us 07:11 The positive side of midlife and ageing 08:06 How patriarchal structures affect women 11:01 The economic reality for women 13:24 Is the patriarchy really disappearing? 15:22 Menopause as a spiritual gateway 16:56 The unexpected gift of becoming a grandmother 19:33 Why life after menopause can feel so good 20:09 Perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause 21:14 Should we celebrate menopause? 22:11 The freedom of the empty nest 23:02 Sleep after menopause 25:49 The advantages of an empty nest 26:17 Being bold as we grow older
