The colonists of the Lost Colony of Roanoke carved exactly where they were going. So why were they never found?
In 1587, more than one hundred English men, women, and children sailed for a sheltered bay in America. Instead, their own pilot left them on Roanoke Island. Their governor, John White, sailed home for supplies and promised to return within a year. It took him three. When he finally came back, on his granddaughter Virginia Dare's third birthday, the colonists were gone, and one word was carved into the gatepost: CROATOAN. He knew the place. It was fifty miles away. He never reached it.
In this historical documentary, we follow the story from the first day at sea to the clues uncovered centuries later.
We will look at:
The pilot who stranded the colonists and the first English settlers to vanish from Roanoke
Manteo, the Croatoan people, and the dawn attack on the wrong people
The birth of Virginia Dare and the secret signal agreed before White left
The Spanish Armada, a pirate attack, and the Spanish search of 1588
The 1590 return, the songs in the dark, and the word CROATOAN
The clues found later: tree rings, a hidden symbol on White's map, and Site X
This video is created for educational purposes and discusses conflict, disease, and loss of life without graphic detail.
