"Mabuhay si Osmeña!" - Filipino Post-World War II March (1945)

"Mabuhay si Osmeña!", also known alternatively under the English title "Long Live President Osmeña" is a Filipino March composed in 1945 during the aftermath of the Second World War. The music was composed by Pastor de Jesus, who also wrote the Tagalog lyrics. A corresponding English lyrics was also written by Lou Salvador. Originally written in a march-like "grandioso" tempo for piano and voice, the song praises President Sergio Osmeña who served as the Second President of the Philippine Commonwealth from 1944-1946. Serving as Vice President from 1935, Osmeña succeeded President Manuel Quezon when the latter died on August 1, 1944. Leading the government in exile during the Second World War, the President oversaw cooperation with US forces during the Philippine Liberation Campaign of 1944-45, the eventual restoration of the Commonwealth Government, the reorganization of government, and rehabilitation from wartime destruction. He tried to win a second term during the 1946 Elections ahead of the establishment of the Third Republic on July 4 of that year, but he was defeated by Manuel Roxas of the Liberal Party who broke away from Osmeña's dominant Nacionalista Party.
