Afiaolu Festival 2026 | Ajofia Masquerade Storms Nnewi

This year, the Igwe of Nnewi attended Afiaolu 2026 after peace was restored in Nnewi. For four days, the streets turned into one giant celebration — this is Afiaolu, the New Yam Festival, and it's unlike anything you've seen. Afiaolu runs across four villages — Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi. Day one starts with the Igwe of Nnewi cutting the new yam, then each village takes its turn to celebrate over the following days. In this video, I went down to Nnewi to experience it for myself — kolanut rituals, traditional wrestling, masquerades taking over the streets, and Ajofia, one of the most feared and respected masquerades in Igboland.
