J.S. Bach - Meine Seele erhebt den Herren (BWV 648) - Ben Bloor

Meine Seele erhebt den Herren (BWV 648) by Johann Sebastian Bach performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 2023 Eule organ of Magdalen College, Oxford on Monday 25th November 2024. BWV 645-650 are commonly known as the Schübler chorales, so called after the name of the publisher Johann Georg Schübler. Aside from 'Wo soll ich fliehen hin' (BWV 646) whose origins remain unclear due to a lost source, the rest of the collection can be traced back to movements from Bach's choral cantatas. 'Meine Seele erhebt den Herren' (BWV 648) is a transcription by the composer of the fifth movement of his 'German Magnificat' (BWV 10). The text is Luther's translation of the Magnificat and the melody is based on the Gregorian chant, the tonus peregrinus (wandering tone). Many thanks to Mark Williams, Alex Pott and Drew Sellis for their help in facilitating this recital. Ben Bloor is Organist at the London Oratory Church and School Organist at Westminster School.
