The man who killed Wallace is alive, employed, and wearing a name tag. Not Bodie. Bodie fired first, into the stomach, and then he froze. Poot took the gun out of his hand and put two more rounds into Wallace's face. By the end of the series, Poot is managing a shoe store. By the end of this essay, you will understand exactly why the heaviest ledger on that corner gets the lightest ending in the show. My argument is this. The Wire deliberately hands its softest, quietest, most ordinary ending to the character carrying the worst single act any of the pit boys commit. That is not an accident of writing and it is not the show going easy... Why does the show let the man who pulled the trigger on Wallace walk away into an ordinary life while almost everyone around him dies or goes down?
