Marcus Aurelius sleep story: a gentle Stoic bedtime story for adults who wake at night — how a Roman emperor slept in a winter army camp on the Danube, and the morning argument he wrote in the Meditations. History and philosophy for deep sleep, no ads.
If you're awake tonight, tell me what time it is where you are. I read them all.
The most powerful man alive lost an argument with his blanket. Not once — most mornings. And he wrote it down, both sides, in a notebook nobody was meant to read.
Winter, somewhere on the Danube frontier, in a leather tent. Thousands of soldiers in rows around him, eight to a tent, and a horn that sounded four times a night. The emperor of Rome, lying there at dawn, saying to himself: but it's warm under here.
The passage is in the fifth book of the Meditations. At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: I have to go to work — as a human being. Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm? And then, honestly: but it's nicer here. He wrote the same argument again three books later. A man doesn't write a reminder twice if it worked the first time.
This is a story about how a Roman camp slept — the four watches, the password passed from tent to tent, the cloak that was blanket and roof — and about the one argument every person has had on a cold morning. He never called the blanket weak. He never called the wanting shameful. He heard it, wrote it down, and went to work.
And at night, he didn't argue at all.
This is about seventy minutes for anyone who has ever felt small for wanting to stay under the covers. There's nothing to do while you listen. Nothing to remember in the morning. The blanket was right.
