September 25th, 2024 - October 2nd, 2024. Watauga County, Boone, N.C. My story begins just two days before Hurricane Helene arrived. I was happily gathering pawpaws for the first time—a rare native fruit often called America's tropical fruit, found growing in the Appalachian Mountains. Like so many others in Watauga County, I never imagined the level of destruction that was about to unfold. In a matter of hours, familiar roads, rivers, and communities were transformed by one of the most devastating events our region had ever seen. Yet amid the devastation around every corner, there was also something remarkable: the strength, resilience, and endurance of our community. Neighbors helped neighbors long before outside assistance could arrive. As everything unfolded before my eyes, and through conversations with my friend Dawn Shumate during those uncertain moments, I witnessed Watauga County become a disaster area—and I also witnessed the compassion, courage, and unity that carried us through it. This video shares that experience and serves as a reminder of the challenges we faced and the spirit that helped us endure. Featured locations include Boone, Todd, Sugar Grove, Cove Creek, and Zionville in Watauga County, North Carolina. Special guest appearance by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.
