Jaehaerys's eldest grandson, Prince Viserys, is chosen over his eldest grandchild, Princess Rhaenys. Nine years into Viserys' reign, Master of Ships Corlys Velaryon fails to convince the Small Council to take arms against the Triarchy, an Essos alliance threatening to cripple Westerosi shipping lanes. Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower criticizes Viserys's younger brother and heir, Prince Daemon, regarding his errant behavior and brutality as the King's Landing guards' commander. Viserys organizes a tournament to celebrate Queen Aemma's pregnancy, certain of a male heir. At the tournament, Ser Criston Cole, a common-born Dornish knight, outcompetes Daemon while Aemma and her son die during a difficult childbirth. Viserys refuses the Small Council's pleas to anoint a new heir presumptive until learning that Daemon toasted his dead son at a brothel, styling him, "The Heir for a Day."
