I'm a ranger in the Smokies, and I've learned that when you're alone in the backcountry, you don't always know what you're hearing. A strange noise in the distance. A voice coming from somewhere deep in the trees. A radio transmission that shouldn't be there. And sometimes... when you call for help, something answers.
