I wrote this for my daughter’s 13th birthday, during one of the hardest chapters our family has ever lived through. I wanted to give her something she could come back to throughout her life. A reminder of the girl I have always seen when I look at her, especially on the days when she might struggle to see that person herself. The name Little Warlord came from her Nanma, who has called her that since she was a baby. And somehow, it has always suited her perfectly. ❤️ She has always been this incredible mixture of wild and gentle. The little girl who buried dolls beneath flowers and created vampire queens and creepy clowns. Who climbed too high, swung from palm trees, danced in ballet shoes, pulled on muddy soccer boots, tried gymnastics and boxing, and seemed to approach every new challenge as though “you can’t” were simply an invitation to prove somebody wrong. But beneath all that stubbornness and courage is one of the softest hearts I know. This song is a collection of those little pieces of her childhood, written down before thirteen became fourteen, then fifteen, then adulthood. so that no matter how much life changes her, there will always be somewhere she can hear her mum’s words reminding her… You have always been extraordinary in my eyes. You have always been stronger than you knew. And wherever life takes you, I’ll be beside you every single mile. ❤️ She currently thinks the song is incredibly “cringe” because apparently having your mum immortalise your childhood in music is deeply embarrassing when you’re thirteen. 😂 That’s okay. One day, I hope she understands why I needed to write it.
