In this calming Christian history documentary, we follow the quiet, painful question at the heart of the Huguenot story: why hundreds of thousands of French Protestants chose to leave their homeland rather than change their worship.
Long bound together by one king, one law and one faith, France was deeply shaken as French Bibles, psalters and the teaching of John Calvin spread through printers, merchants and Geneva-trained pastors. What began as small barn meetings with shutters closed slowly became organized congregations with consistories, discipline and a Confession of Faith, and a kingdom that prized unity came to see that difference as disloyalty.
We'll explore every major chapter of this long road into exile, from the Placards of 1534 and growing persecution under Henry II to the bloodshed at Vassy, the Wars of Religion, the failed Colloquy of Poissy and the horror of Saint Bartholomew in 1572. Along the way, we'll meet Catherine de Medici, Coligny, Jeanne d'Albret and Henry of Navarre, and trace how Henry IV's Edict of Nantes in 1598 created an armed peace, how Richelieu removed its military guarantees after the siege of La Rochelle and the Peace of Ales, and how Louis XIV's slow squeeze of temple demolitions, profession bans, child removals and the dragonnades led to revocation in the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685.
From night boats to England and forest paths to Switzerland to new French churches in Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Switzerland and lands beyond, to the secret hillside meetings of the Desert and the Camisard revolt, we'll follow the complete tale of conscience, loss and endurance that scattered a people and yet preserved their song.
Told in a calm and soothing style, this video invites you to relax, unwind, and drift off to sleep while experiencing the full story of the Huguenots and why staying faithful meant, for many, they had to stop staying.
Please note that while the narrative is thoroughly based on historical research, its primary purpose is storytelling for entertainment and relaxation. As such, it is not intended to be used as a formal academic or scientific source.
