Grow food from what you already throw away. All 101 methods from this channel, arranged by the 24 Japanese seasons, are in The Masao Garden Almanac:
A corner two feet by two feet is enough room for a real potato harvest, if you grow it the way Japanese families do on small lots and balconies. They call it fukuro saibai, bag growing, and every step is about making a little soil work hard.
The seed potatoes sit in the light for about a month before planting, so they grow short, tough sprouts that come up fast and all together. When the stems appear, you pull out most of them and keep the strongest two, so the plant puts its food into fewer, bigger potatoes. Then you add soil a few inches at a time and never bury more than half the plant, because the leaves are what fill the box. That last mistake is why so many potato boxes end up full of dirt with a handful of potatoes at the bottom.
You'll also see which varieties are worth growing in a box, how to tuck in a second layer of seed potatoes, how to keep the soil cool enough for potatoes to keep forming, and how to tip the whole harvest out on a tarp without digging. Then how to cure and store it so it keeps into winter.
Where are you going to put your potato box this spring? Tell me in the comments.
