Carolan's Dream on steel string ukulele

'Carolan's Dream' is attributed to the Irish bard and harpist Turlough Carolan. Donal O'Sullivan's book suggests, however, that while it was a favourite tune of Carolan's, and he possibly adapted it, it was most likely composed by William Connellan. Whatever its origin it is a beautiful, haunting tune. My aim was to explore the language of the steel strings in the arrangement (a nod there to Jonathan de Souza's 'Music at Hand') and see how they might inform the creative process. The basic premise: Do steel strings impact the way I arrange, and, if so, how? I hasten to add that my playing experience of steel strings is limited but I've previously worked with Klaus Weiland and listened to many steel string players. Thinking especially of Jeff Peterson. While the arrangement is basically in chord melody style I used more delayed slurs than usual and employed Pierre Bensusan's harp-effect (campanella) in several passages. The over-ringing and extra resonance of steel is greater than nylon or fluorocarbon and, by moving single notes across the strings, creates what I think is a very pleasing effect. Campanella is not new to me but this is a different context and I think it only right to use Bensusan's terminology. Harp-effect also sounds less pretentious! I did find it harder to control the steel strings. Perhaps an analogy would be like jumping on a lively filly for the first time. Of course, the arrangement can be played on any ukulele with a low 4th tuning but the effect is more pronounced on steel. Well, that was the experiment and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
