The history of Syria is the history of a crossroads nobody was ever allowed to keep quietly. This documentary covers the entire history of Syria, from Ebla and Ugarit to the fall of Assad and the river fight happening right now. Every major trade route between Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean has passed through this strip of land for five thousand years. When Arab armies captured Damascus in 634 AD, the city was already more than three thousand years old. The Akkadians, the Assyrians, the Seleucids, the Crusaders, the Mamluks, the Ottomans, and the French all ruled here, and all of them are gone. Damascus is still standing. In December 2024, fifty-four years of Assad family rule ended not in a final battle, but in an eleven-day retreat. This documentary follows the complete history of Syria: the Ebla archive and the oldest bureaucracy in the Levant, the farmer who found the oldest alphabet on Earth at Ugarit, the Mari tablets and the Euphrates trade network, the Battle of Kadesh and the oldest surviving peace treaty, the Assyrian and Babylonian conquests, Alexander the Great and the Seleucid capital at Antioch, Roman Syria and the first use of the word Christian, Queen Zenobia's breakaway empire at Palmyra and the 2015 destruction of its ruins, the Battle of Yarmouk and the Umayyad Caliphate, the layered history of the Umayyad Mosque, the Abbasid shift to Baghdad, the Crusader states and Saladin, the Mongol sack of Aleppo and the Mamluk victory at Ain Jalut, Timur and Damascus steel, four centuries of Ottoman rule, Sykes-Picot, Faisal's short-lived kingdom, the French Mandate and the Great Syrian Revolt, independence in 1946, the coup era and Hafez al-Assad's rise, the Hama massacre, the 2011 uprising, the civil war, the Ghouta chemical attack, the rise and fall of ISIS in Raqqa, Russian and Iranian intervention, the siege of Aleppo, Assad's collapse in December 2024, the Sednaya prison discoveries, the 2025 sectarian violence, and the Euphrates water crisis today. Every empire that wanted this crossroads eventually left. The river, the trade, and the people who actually lived here never did. The oldest fight over this land was never about who rules Damascus. It was always about who controls what crosses it, and that fight has now moved from armies to water. This documentary is based on archaeological discoveries, peer-reviewed research, and primary historical sources. We bring history to life while remaining faithful to the historical record.
