I found some old reviews from Paris, 1838. I believe the critique is pianist and composer Stephen Heller (?). The translation is a bit dodgy but I think it gets it's point across. English: The "fantasy on the march of the knights of the Enchanted Tower of the Jewess" has no other fault than to bear the title of fantasy. Why didn't Mr. Méreaux give his work the name that really suited it, such as air with variations? An introduction of more or less does not change the matter and does not make a variations tune become a fantasy. Besides, as variations, these belong to the prettiest and most successful that I have encountered for a long time. They not only offer pianists the opportunity to display great performing talent, they are also likely to appeal to amateurs and connoisseurs alike. It would be superfluous to add anything more on these variations which can worthily support the parallel with the best productions of this genre. Perhaps we could blame the finish for a little length; but I think like my friend, the composer Robert Schumann, that this itself is a very good sign, since a composer, in whom there is an abundance of ideas, will never be embarrassed to reach his end, like a poor devil whose sterile imagination runs dry from the first attempts. In summary, these variations are most remarkable, and if it is musical justice, they will soon be known and appreciated by all friends of pretty music. H
