Have pest controllers become too reliant on bait stations, and how much has the industry really changed over the years? In Episode 87 of Pest Perspectives Podcast, I'm joined by Hugh Radford from Guardian Pest Control in Somerset. Hugh is also Vice Chair of the NPTA and co-host of the Beauties and Beasties Podcast. Hugh started his career in pest control back in 1987, so he's seen plenty of changes in the industry, from how technicians worked decades ago to the training, regulations and technology we use today. We get into quite a few subjects during this conversation, including whether external bait stations and monitoring blocks are being overused. Hugh shares his views on traditional pest control methods, the importance of proper inspections and why technicians shouldn't become too dependent on equipment. We also discuss rodenticide stewardship, CRRU, the pressures facing pest control businesses and the increasing amount of compliance and paperwork involved in commercial pest management. Hugh talks about his experiences building Guardian Pest Control, working in a family business and how the industry has developed over nearly four decades. Other subjects include CPD and training, bed bug treatments, ChinChex, the NPTA, PestTech 2026 and the work involved in producing independent pest control podcasts. There are some interesting opinions throughout, particularly around baiting practices and where professional pest management might be heading. I'd be interested to hear what other technicians think about some of the points raised. Do you think we're becoming too reliant on external bait stations, or are they an essential part of modern rodent management? Let us know in the comments.
