In the fall of 1806, a Spanish commander had more than 600 troops in what's now western Louisiana, and an American general came west to push him out. Nobody fired a shot. What the two sides agreed to instead is still out there, on land you can drive across today, and I'm saving it for the end. This is a countdown of 13 Louisiana border towns where the line itself is the secret, up against Arkansas, across the river from Mississippi and facing Texas, from Union Parish on the 33rd parallel to Washington Parish on the Pearl River and DeSoto Parish on the Sabine. It runs through Junction City, Springhill, Waterproof, Burr Ferry, Bogalusa, Vinton, Vidalia, Saint Francisville, Delta, Zwolle, Logansport and Lake Providence. Along the way, one town sits in two states at once, another used to be called Barefoot, and a whole town moves a mile inland. A river does in one afternoon what two Union generals couldn't, a granite post in the woods still reads R.T. for Republic of Texas, and around 2,000 acres pressed against the Louisiana bank turn out to belong to Mississippi. And as Logansport tells it, the one man at the Alamo who wouldn't cross the line in the sand very likely crossed the Sabine on its ferry. Ever crossed one of these lines without noticing? Tell me which crossing, and which side of it you call home.
