If Your Surname Is on This List, It May Have a Hasidic Jewish History

Names Uncovered explores the hidden history behind surnames, ancestry, family origins, migration, religion, and cultural identity through illustrated historical storytelling. Discover the forgotten people, places, records, and journeys hidden inside the names we still carry. Some surnames that look German, ordinary, or purely geographic carry a much deeper history inside Hasidic and Ashkenazi Jewish communities. In this video, we trace names such as Weiss, Horowitz, Twersky, Shapiro, Friedman, Katz and others through rabbinical dynasties, surname registration laws, migration routes, synagogue traditions, and Eastern European Jewish records. A surname alone cannot prove Jewish or Hasidic ancestry, but in the right historical and geographic context, it can become a powerful clue. From Galicia and the Pale of Settlement to Brooklyn and beyond, these names preserve fragments of migration, religious identity, and family memory that survived for generations.
