"The Door Is Always Open" is a gentle folk ballad about belonging by Emma the Bard: a village pub at dusk, a warm seat by the fire, and room for whoever walks in cold.
A wet traveller is allowed to rest before anyone asks a question. A woman sits beside an empty chair with a warm cup. A tired wall-mender dozes while the dog claims his feet. A newcomer is shown the coat hook, the mugs and a stool, and told everyone's names again. There's a kettle, bread and a fire, and by the end one stool is still free beside the heat.
It's a quiet community song about small kindnesses and company, where nobody has to explain themselves. Part of the Sunday Hearthside series of hearthside music from Emma the Bard. The video is a modern 2D illustration, with Emma, our pink-and-white husky, singing by the hearth.
Is there a place where you've always felt welcome, whether a kitchen table, a local pub, a shop or a friend's sofa? Tell me about it in the comments.
