For my current Outlander video, I chose the song "I'd Do Anything For Love". The original song version is by Meat Loaf and is over 5 minutes long. However, I opted for the wonderful acoustic version by Mateo Oxley. It's a lot slower and a lot shorter, which is good because I wouldn't have been able to make a video for the whole 5 minutes.
The song is challenging because it is probably one of the most misunderstood songs ever. Many people simply don't understand what is meant by the line "but I won't do that" (do what?). This is due to the structure of the song. The way the lyrics are arranged is confusing. The song tells the story of a man who declares his love for a woman. In the course of the song, he lists various things he would do for love, e.g. "run to hell and back". But what he would not do for love isn't clear because it’s just stated in the line before the chorus begins.
For example, the promise "but I'll never forget the way you feel right now", actually corresponds to the last line, "but I won't do that". The chorus interrupts the thought. Therefore, "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now. I would do anything for love, but I won't do that (no, I won't forget how you feel right now)." I hope this clarfies the pattern.
As beautiful as this version by Mateo Oxley is, it didn't make it any easier for me to translate this already confusing text with pictures because large parts of the text have been omitted. Unfortunately, this includes one of the promises that is important for understanding and making sense of the text. After the part with the stars and planets, the verse continues and should have given another promise at the end, to which the following "but I won't do that" would have referred. But this line was left out. In order to make the text at least halfway meaningful, I tried to create a reference to the first promise. That he won't forget how she felt at that moment (in my case, after the spanking). It's not perfect, but it was the only way I could think of.
As this is all very theoretical, I have tried to illustrate it with the help of colored symbols in the text. The promise has a yellow symbol🔸 as a marker and the "but I won't do that" that refers to it as well. I have placed a blue symbol🔹 where the omitted text would have been. The following "but I won't do that" no longer has any reference, which is why I have referred it to the yellow marked point in the text.
I would do anything for love
I′d run right into hell and back
I would do anything for love
I'll never lie to you and that′s a fact
🔸But I'll never forget the way you feel right now
Oh, no, no way
And I would do anything for love
🔸But I won't do that
🔸No, I won′t do that
And some nights you're breathing fire
And some nights you′re carved in ice
Some nights you′re like nothing I've ever seen before
Or will again
And maybe I'm crazy
Oh, it′s crazy and it′s true
I know you can save me
No one else can save me now but you
As long as the planets are turning
As long as the stars are burning
As long as your dreams are coming true
You better believe it
That I would do anything for love
… omitted text and🔹promise…
🔹🔸But I won′t do that
🔹🔸No, I won't do that
Will you raise me up? Will you help me down?
Will you get me right out of this godforsaken town?
Will you make it all a little less cold?
I can do that
Oh, I can do that
I know the territory, I′ve been around
It′ll all turn to dust, and we'll all fall down
🔸Sooner or later, you′ll be screwing around
🔸I won't do that
🔸No, won′t do that
Anything for love
Yes, I would do anything for love
I would do anything for love
🔸But I won't do that
🔸No, I won′t do that
We know that Jamie would do anything for Claire, just as she would for him. And we know that he once promised never to lay a hand on her again. He kept that promise. He never forgot that he almost lost her when he physically chastised her. And certainly not her threat from back then. Both are prepared to sacrifice and risk everything for each other. That's why I found this song so fitting, even if the realization was challenging. But that's what often appeals to me. Finding ways to make songs fit. I hope you like the video and I look forward to your feedback. Also about the song itself. Did you understand it or was it unclear to you? I am curious.
