About 150 people on my colony live out of one purse. Nobody draws a wage, and when the colony splits, it builds a whole new one: land, barns, houses and a kitchen. One colony leader told the CBC that the budget for that averages around $30 million. Meanwhile 1 Canadian in 4 can't cover a surprise $500 bill.
I'm Andreas Wurz, a Hutterite. I keep the books on a colony of 150 people in southern Alberta. Here are the seven money habits that let a colony do it, and what each one looks like in an ordinary house.
IN THIS VIDEO
#7 Write it down (15 minutes a week, 13 hours a year)
#6 Know what a month costs before it costs it (wheat at $8.86 a bushel, and the subscriptions nobody uses)
#5 Three quotes, and one week
#4 Share the big things, and buy them used (7 vehicles for 21 families)
#3 Fix it yourself (the $173.65 shop hour)
#2 Borrow only for what lasts longer than the loan
#1 Save for the next one (how a colony saves for the day it splits)
• The part I have to be fair about: what a colony has that a family can't copy
Nothing in this video is financial, tax or legal advice. The worked examples are mine, with the assumptions said out loud.
Tell me in the comments: do you know, to the nearest hundred dollars, what one month of your house costs? And what's the one thing you fixed yourself that saved you the most? I read every one.
