Can legal AI replace a paralegal? For document-heavy work at a small firm, yes. Nicole Komin and Danielle Shainbrown hired a paralegal who could not redline a document, replaced the role with GC AI, and say it saved the salary of maybe two full-time employees. Nicole Komin and Danielle Shainbrown are co-founders of Bellwether Advisors, LLC and Shainbrown Komin, PLLC, two Buffalo firms both launched on January 1, 2022. Before founding the firms, Komin was an assistant general counsel and owner's representative at McGuire Development Company, and earlier drafted wills for ICU patients as an elder law attorney at the Center for Elder Law and Justice. Shainbrown spent 11 years at McGuire, joining as general counsel, building its ownership representation division, and rising to executive vice president and then president during the pandemic. She is a Buffalo Business First 40 Under 40 honoree, and Komin won the Erie County Bar Association's Doris S. Hoffman Outstanding New Lawyer Award. In this episode of CZ and Friends, Komin and Shainbrown share: Why the right legal AI for a specific job can outperform a generalist hire, since their paralegal could not redline a document and GC AI suggested redlines inside Word from the first session. How solving capacity with software removed the fear that had blocked hiring a second attorney for years. How an escape hatch notebook, filled in during secret one-on-ones, turned a vague ambition into a month-by-month launch plan. What owner's representative experience teaches a lawyer about reading a purchase and sale agreement, from due diligence periods that ran 7 to 360 days to what happens when the clauses blow up. Why running a law firm and a consulting practice in parallel keeps their ethical and billing lines clean. How a small legal market like Buffalo rewards relationship discipline, since the lawyer across the table this week shows up in your next deal. CZ and Friends is hosted by Cecilia Ziniti, co-founder and CEO of GC AI, the legal AI platform built for in-house counsel. This episode is guest-hosted by Laurel Palluzi, General Counsel at GC AI.
