"Agapanthus Flower Varieties" takes you through the many stunning African Lily cultivars gardeners love, from deep indigo blues to pure snow whites. In this video we look at Agapanthus Albus, Black Pantha, Blue Storm, Bressingham Blue, Bressingham White, Peter Pan, Queen Mum, Snowball, and Twister, showing how each cultivar's flower color, height, and bloom form sets it apart.
Agapanthus, often called "Lily of the Nile," is actually native to southern Africa, where explorers first brought it to Europe in the late 1600s. It thrives in full sun, needing at least six hours of direct light a day to bloom fully and keep its foliage lush and green (afternoon shade helps in very hot climates). Plant it in light, loamy soil that drains quickly, ideally with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water new plants about one inch per week while they establish, then cut back to around half an inch weekly once settled, watering the roots rather than the leaves to avoid fungal issues. Agapanthus is hardy in USDA zones 8-10; in colder areas, bring container and evergreen varieties indoors once temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
A caution for pet owners: agapanthus contains saponins throughout the plant, with the highest concentration in the roots, leaves, and sap. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and mouth irritation in dogs, cats, and horses, with cats especially sensitive even to small amounts, so it's best kept out of reach of curious pets.
Whether you're planning a new perennial border or just love the striking globe-shaped blooms, this video will help you identify and appreciate the full range of agapanthus varieties available today. #agapanthus #agapanthusvarieties #lilyofthenile
