Liskeard Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cornwall, and around 30 miles east of Newquay, is the town of Liskeard. The town's name derives from Cornish 'Lys Kerwyd', meaning 'court of Kerwyd', presumably in reference to a local chieftain. In 1240 it was granted a market charter by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, brother of Henry III. During the medieval era, Liskeard was granted stannary town status. Tin from the surrounding area was brought here to be weighed, assayed and taxed. Other Cornish towns granted the same status included Lostwithiel, Bodmin, Truro and Helston. It maintained its role up until 1838, when the old coinage system was abolished. During the 19th century Liskeard experienced significant growth due to the mining of copper, lead and silver in the wider area. At the eastern end of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Martin. This dates from the Norman era, although is comprised mainly of 15th century fabric and a tower that was rebuilt between 1898 and 1903. In 1859 the railway arrived in Liskeard courtesy of the Cornwall Railway. The station of today is situated on the Cornish Main Line which runs between Plymouth and Penzance.
