Amjad Ali Khan — Sarod Grand Master
Amjad Ali Khan is widely regarded as one of the greatest living masters of Indian classical music and one of the world’s foremost exponents of the sarod.
Born into the illustrious Senia lineage as the son of legendary sarod maestro Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan, he gave his first public performance at the age of six. Across a career spanning more than six decades, Amjad Ali Khan has transformed the art of sarod playing through his distinctive style, technical brilliance, and profound musical vision, inspiring generations of musicians and audiences worldwide.
His extraordinary contributions to music have earned him numerous international honors, including a Grammy Award, the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum, the Fukuoka Cultural Grand Prize, the Global Music Awards Gold Medal, and his appointment as a National Ambassador for UNICEF. He has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Kennedy Center, the House of Commons in London, and the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo.
A visionary composer, Amjad Ali Khan created the acclaimed sarod concerto Samaagam, which has been performed by leading orchestras around the world, including the Britten Sinfonia, Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, Orchestre d’Auvergne, Philharmonia Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
As an inspiring educator and cultural ambassador, he has shared his knowledge through lectures, workshops, and residencies at distinguished institutions including Stanford University, the University of New Mexico, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
In 2018, Amjad Ali Khan headlined the United Nations Day Concert alongside his sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash and the Refugee Orchestra Project. Dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, the concert celebrated the theme “Traditions of Peace and Non-Violence” in the presence of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
Continuing to build bridges across musical traditions, he collaborated with Gwen Stefani, Jon Bon Jovi, and Joe Walsh for the VetsAid charity concerts in 2020 and 2021. Together with Joe Walsh, he released the three-track EP Prayers, honoring healthcare professionals and frontline workers whose courage and compassion inspired the world during the pandemic.
In recognition of his enduring artistic legacy and humanitarian contributions, the City of San Diego proclaimed April 13 as “Amjad Ali Khan Day.”
His celebrated recent work, the Grammy Award-winning album Meditations: Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, brings together the spoken reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama with deeply evocative music by Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Bangash, Ayaan Ali Bangash, and producer Kabir Sehgal. Blending India’s rich classical traditions with musical influences from around the world, the album creates a profound dialogue between wisdom and melody, conveying a timeless message of peace, compassion, kindness, and hope.
