On This Day in Jazz History… On September 17, 1926, Eugene McDuffy was born in Champaign, Illinois. He started on bass, and by 1960 he was recording for Prestige as organist Brother Jack McDuff. In 1963, McDuff was trying out guitar players in Pittsburgh when George Benson, a young local known mostly as a singer, sat in with the band. In Benson's telling, McDuff liked him enough to call his manager and say he was bringing the kid to New York. The job nearly ended on the first night out. McDuff started into jazz tunes Benson couldn't follow and told him he didn't think he'd make it. Weeks later, with Benson learning the band's book, the manager heard the group and said the kid had to stay. Benson stayed. On May 1, 1964, he cut his first album as a leader, The New Boss Guitar of George Benson, with McDuff on organ.
