Astronauts on the Moon saw a black sky at noon. What if the Moon had a real atmosphere? In this animated explainer we look at the Moon's ultra-thin exosphere (studied by NASA's LADEE), why weak gravity, sunlight and the solar wind strip gases away, how Saturn's moon Titan keeps a thick atmosphere, and the 2017 idea that ancient volcanoes briefly gave the Moon air. Then we imagine an Earth-like atmosphere: blue skies, hours-long sunsets, clouds seen from Earth, fewer craters, gentler temperatures, dust storms, sound, flying with wings, and why the air would slowly leak away, as it did on Mars. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 A black sky at noon 0:26 The Moon's tiny exosphere 1:08 Why no air? 1:48 Titan keeps its air 2:22 An ancient atmosphere? 3:04 Blue skies on the Moon 3:48 The view from Earth 4:11 Tết Trung Thu with a cloudy Moon 4:40 Fewer craters 5:08 Gentler temperatures 5:38 Dust storms 6:10 A Moon with sound 6:41 Easier for humans? 7:19 Would it last? 8:08 A magnetic shield? 8:41 Could it really happen? 9:10 Summary Note: this is a thought experiment. The ancient lunar atmosphere (Needham & Kring 2017) is a model still being tested; the strength and duration of the Moon's early magnetic field is debated. 📚 Sources & further reading NASA LADEE mission – the lunar exosphere NASA – escape velocities and lunar surface gravity NASA / ESA Cassini–Huygens – Titan's atmosphere Needham & Kring (2017), Earth and Planetary Science Letters – a transient lunar atmosphere Green et al.
