This song, “Watch and Pray,” was inspired by Pastor Tim Marang’s sermon from Matthew 26:36–46 at Berea Grace Brethren Church. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus faced sorrow, temptation, spiritual battle, and the cross that lay before Him. Yet He drew near to the Father and prayed: “Not My will, but Yours, be done.” And to His disciples He gave this warning: “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41 That message is just as important for us today. Jesus understands temptation because He faced it Himself—“yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). He knows the pull. He knows the battle. And He showed us where strength is found: in the Word of God, in submission to the Father, and in prayer. Pastor Tim said, “He overcame not only for us, but also to show us the way.” Peter shows us the other side of the lesson. He confidently said he would die with Jesus, yet in Gethsemane he slept instead of praying. Before dawn he denied the Lord three times. But Peter’s failure was not the end of his story. Jesus died the very next day for Peter’s sin. That is the beauty of the Gospel: grace is stronger than our failure. Because of Christ, we are not merely forgiven—we are freed. No longer slaves to yesterday. No longer ruled by sinful passions. We are free to love, free to serve, free to obey, and free to walk in righteousness by faith. When temptation comes, Scripture tells us to “come boldly to the throne of grace” so that we may “obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). So hear the words of Christ again: Watch and pray. There is grace enough for the battle today. 📖 Scripture references: Matthew 26:36–46 Matthew 4:1–11 Hebrews 2:18 Hebrews 4:15–16 James 4:7 1 Thessalonians 5:5–8 ⛪ Inspired by the preaching of Pastor Tim Marang Berea Grace Brethren Church — Berea, Ohio 🎵 “Jesus faced the spiritual battle that night. He watched. He prayed. And He overcame. And in Him, we too can overcome.” Not my will, but Yours be done.
