Spent the most cozy weekend with my family at a quiet pottery town tucked in the rolling hills an hour outside the city! 🥰 We pulled into the cobblestone main street around 9 a.m., and the whole town smelled like wet clay and wood smoke from the pottery kilns. First stop was a family-run studio – the owner handed us lumps of cool, malleable gray clay, and walked us through the basics of throwing on the wheel. My mom tried to make a matching set of mugs, but her first one wobbled so bad it collapsed into a lumpy puddle halfway through, we all laughed so hard our sides hurt. My dad ended up with a wonky but charming cereal bowl that he’s already insisting on using every morning, and I made a lopsided vase that still holds water somehow. After we fired and glazed our pieces (we get to pick them up in two weeks, can’t wait!), we wandered through the town’s open-air pottery exhibit. All the display shelves were lined with hand-thrown works – delicate celadon teapots, rough-textured planters covered in wild glazes, even whimsical ceramic animal figurines that local students made. We stopped for lunch at a little café with tables made of reclaimed wood, served homemade soup in hand-thrown ceramic bowls, and the food tasted extra warm and comforting somehow. Driving back as the sun set, our car was full of little pottery trinkets we picked up from the exhibit, and my cheeks hurt from laughing all day.
