September 6, 2026 (Sun) – Part 9 I went to the observation deck at the Fukuoka Airport domestic terminal to take some photos, even though I was worried about the rain. 🤗 #FukuokaAirport #Airplane #CongestedAirport #TakeoffAndLanding #Splash Fukuoka Airport (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City)—considered the most congested airport in Japan—began operations on its second runway on March 20, 2025. The move aims to alleviate runway congestion. In the 2023 fiscal year, Fukuoka Airport saw a record high of approximately 24.94 million passengers, ranking fourth nationwide behind Haneda, Narita, and Kansai International airports. With 179,000 annual takeoffs and landings (excluding helicopters), it boasts the highest number of operations per runway in the country, earning it the reputation of being the "most congested airport in Japan." In principle, the second runway is used for international flight takeoffs. However, the spacing between the two runways is a narrow 210 meters, making simultaneous takeoffs and landings impossible. This spacing was chosen because widening the gap would have required a massive expansion of the airport grounds. Consequently, the operational capacity—the number of takeoffs and landings that can be handled stably—will increase by only about 6.8%, rising from the current 176,000 operations per year (38 per hour) to 188,000 (40 per hour).
