Night in late autumn deep in a Japanese forest. A tall waterfall drops in two steps down a dark cliff, its white water and spray catching the light of the moon, and a stream runs over mossy stones toward you. The maples on both sides of the falls have turned deep red and orange, and their fallen leaves lie over the moss and the wet rocks, silver where the moonlight reaches them. A small weathered hokora stands on its rock near the water, a single warm light glowing within. Thin mist drifts low between the dark cedar trunks. Somewhere near the shrine a flute is playing, though no one can be seen. One hour by the autumn falls — fourteen quiet variations, "A Flute by the Autumn Falls." The shinobue flute leads tonight, with piano and koto resting beneath it; as the night deepens, the music settles into a slower, quieter flow for drifting into sleep. For deep sleep, quiet nights, meditation, and gentle rest.
