How People Live in Cabo Verde | Why They Live on Volcano That Could Erupt Any Time | 4K Documentary
Off the coast of West Africa, a chain of ten volcanic islands rises out of the Atlantic — and on one of them, people have chosen to build their homes inside the crater of an active volcano.
In this 4K documentary, we explore how people live in Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), one of Africa's most isolated island nations. On the island of Fogo, the village of Chã das Caldeiras sits directly on the slopes of Pico do Fogo, a volcano that erupted in 2014 and buried entire homes under lava. Yet the moment the lava cooled, the people came back and rebuilt on top of it.
Why would anyone live somewhere so dangerous? The answer lies in the soil. We look at how volcanic ash creates some of the richest farmland in the region, how families grow grapes and coffee where nothing else should survive, and what daily life looks like when the ground beneath you could open up at any moment.
Beyond Fogo, we explore the wider story of these islands: centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, a history tied to the Atlantic slave trade, brutal droughts that forced more Cabo Verdeans to leave than remain, and the Creole culture and morna music that turned isolation into one of the most distinctive identities in the Atlantic.
This is life on the edge of eruption — and the people who refuse to leave.
