Las Vegas is planning a massive new airport in the middle of the Nevada desert, roughly 30 miles south of Harry Reid International Airport. But why spend billions building a second airport when the city already has one right beside the Las Vegas Strip?
In 2024, Harry Reid International handled a record 58.4 million passengers, raising concerns about runway capacity, crowded airspace, and future delays. The proposed Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport, also known as the Ivanpah Airport project, is intended to provide additional capacity for Las Vegas as the region continues to grow.
But this project has a complicated history.
First proposed more than two decades ago, the airport was delayed by the Great Recession, revived as passenger numbers surged, and now faces rising costs, environmental opposition, water concerns, and another slowdown in Las Vegas air travel.
With an estimated opening no earlier than 2037, the question is whether Las Vegas can afford to wait—or whether it risks building an expensive airport the city won’t need as soon as expected.
