UN hears concerns over control of AI

The race to develop artificial intelligence is intensifying a global debate over who should control it, and how to protect humanity from its risks. US President Donald Trump has backed a voluntary safety accord with leading technology companies after a White House meeting, stressing industry self-regulation and American leadership. But that flies in the face of calls from others, including the UN Secretary-General, who has pushed for a multilateral AI risk-management framework, while Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is calling for stronger safeguards, including legislation.
