A dry well is a well that does not contain producible hydrocarbons A sub commercial discovery is a hydrocarbon accumulation which has insufficient recoverable volumes to be developed They both cost a lot of money – exploration wells can cost millions These losses are made up for by the successes – but reducing the number of dry wells improves profitability a great deal So why do they happen?
