Inclusive early years practice is built on respectful, ongoing partnerships with families and the wider community. This lesson explains why families are children’s first educators and how their knowledge of a child’s relationships, language, culture, values and routines can strengthen support in the setting. You will explore how to make home visits and settling-in meetings meaningful, listen carefully to families, and create genuine two-way communication rather than relying on one-way updates. The lesson also considers inclusive approaches to home languages, faiths, cultural traditions, food, rest and physical contact. It highlights the importance of flexible communication for families facing work, health or caring pressures, and shows how libraries, cultural organisations, faith groups and community members can enrich children’s learning. Finally, it discusses building trust before raising concerns or involving other professionals, and encourages reflection on barriers that may make relationships feel distant or one-sided. Strong home-setting partnerships help children feel secure, settle more quickly and thrive.
