This is a playthrough (part) of JRPG juggernaut - Square Enix's "sink or swim" turn based romance/action epic: "Final Fantasy VIII." The story surrounds detached introvert "Squall Leonhart" a rising SeeD cadet of the famed military academy Balamb Garden. Squall must (begrudgingly) band together with an unlikely crew of SeeD trainee's (whom unbeknownst to them have more in common then one would believe) to vanquish sorceresses, protect their home, cohorts and ultimately save the world from the threat of time compression.
Final Fantasy VIII was developed by Square Soft's Yoshinori Kitase, taking over from series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi whom took a back seat due to his focus on the movie "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." The game was developed in a custom, proprietary in-house game engine built by Square and was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Square Soft, Electronic Arts & Eidos Interactive. The team working on "VIII" intentionally resisted making a continuation of the highly popular Final Fantasy VII and decided to intentionally flip the formula, a formula which ended up becoming the controversial "Junction system."
"Final Fantasy VIII" achieved critical acclaim at the time with Game Revolution praising it's storyline and ending. Edge called it "a far more accomplished game than FFVII" while also stating that the games length left the story unable to "offer strong dialogue and sub-plots." Electronic Gaming monthly had similar sentiments stating that the character development "is the best of any RPG's" and that "Final Fantasy VIII is the pinnacle of it's genre." Despite the praise the gameplay (junction system) offered more mixed opinions with IGN saying that it felt it was the "weakest aspect of the game."
