The part of a modern sailboat nobody is allowed to look at: https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l... Around 2010 the production boat industry finished a change most buyers never noticed. Hulls moved to vacuum resin infusion, and because you cannot infuse a hull with the structure already in it, the structure became a separate moulded part that gets glued inside the shell and then permanently covered by joinery. Grid, pan, matrix, counter-mould, structural liner: same idea, same adhesive, same result. On a boat with a full liner system, a surveyor can visually inspect as little as 10% of the inside of the hull. This is the full explanation of how modern bluewater sailboats are actually built, what that hides, and what it costs you as the second owner. 🏭 How it is built: hand layup versus resin infusion, why infusion forces modular assembly, why bulkheads went from being glassed and taped in to being bonded, and why the hull-to-deck joint disappeared behind a headliner at the same time. 🧪 Why glue is the issue: secondary adhesive bonds are weaker than primary chemical bonds, adhesion depends entirely on surface prep, every one of those joints is made blind on a production line, and if the hull is unduly stressed the liner can break free. 📐 What Category A actually certifies: Beaufort 8 and 4m significant waves, the STIX stability index, and the thing the plate on your bulkhead does not say — that anyone can still inspect the structure ten years later. 🛥️ The case study: roughly 1,100 Lagoon 450s built from 2010 to 2020, main bulkheads found cracked and pulled away with no wood failure, plywood grade questioned, some bulkheads simply glued rather than taped and glassed. 155 owners came forward, about 50 boats repaired, and fewer than one in five owners ever asked. 💰 Why the repair is the real flaw: a tabbed bulkhead can be reground and re-laminated by any yard. A disbonded grid cannot be reached at all, which is how a repairable boat becomes an insurance write-off. 🔍 Then the four checks you can run yourself: reading the joinery as a movement gauge, percussion testing inside and out, what whitened resin and standing water mean at the keel, and the one question to ask a broker before you make an offer. https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l... ⛵ Boats in this video: Lagoon 450 Modern sailboat construction, resin infusion hull, structural liner, hull grid bonding failure, sailboat bulkhead delamination, sailboat survey limitations, CE Category A ocean, STIX stability index, buying a used bluewater sailboat, production boat quality, Lagoon 450 bulkhead. #sailing #boatbuying #bluewater ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⭐ JOIN THE CHANNEL (member perks)    / @everydaysailing   Subscribe for more videos! 🌊 ALL MY LINKS https://linktr.ee/everydaysailing ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Copyright Disclaimer This video may include copyrighted material used under the "fair use" principle for educational and informational purposes.
