Linux Mint was supposed to be the safest choice for beginners, but when I put it through a real-world gaming test, something went seriously wrong. Meanwhile, CachyOS, the Arch-based Linux distro everyone warned me about, delivered the most surprising result of the entire experiment.
In this head-to-head Linux comparison, I installed Linux Mint, Nobara, and CachyOS on the same 8GB laptop, testing installation difficulty, hardware compatibility, gaming performance, and everyday usability under identical conditions.
Nobara promised a gaming-ready experience but introduced unexpected installation challenges. Linux Mint delivered the smoothest setup, excellent hardware detection, and a beginner-friendly software manager, only to encounter repeated game crashes. CachyOS demanded the most technical effort, yet managed to run the same game without crashing or falling behind.
Inside this comparison:
Linux Mint vs CachyOS vs Nobara: Which Linux distribution performed best under identical conditions?
Linux Mint gaming failure: What the mysterious "Can't keep up" error revealed about memory limitations and system performance.
CachyOS performance advantage: How its optimized packages and BORE kernel scheduler may help explain its stability under pressure.
But does this mean Linux Mint is actually worse than CachyOS? Not necessarily. The experiment exposes the difference between beginner-friendly design, gaming optimization, and the limitations of testing Linux on older hardware.
Tommy Tyson covers Linux distributions, Windows, Microsoft, operating systems, and the technology decisions shaping everyday computing.
