The entire history of Rome is not a simple rise-and-fall story. This documentary follows Rome from a cluster of settlements beside the Tiber to the Roman Republic, the Mediterranean empire of Augustus, the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, and the final conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Along the way, we examine what made Roman expansion possible: alliances, citizenship, military manpower, taxation, provincial administration, and the ability to absorb ideas from Etruscans, Greeks, and conquered peoples. We also follow the human cost of that system through slavery, civil war, political violence, extraction, religious persecution, and repeated struggles over who had the right to be called Roman. This is not a list of emperors and battles. It is the story of an identity that kept changing in order to survive. Why did Hannibal fail to break Rome? How did Caesar and Augustus transform the Republic? Why did the West fragment while the Eastern Roman Empire endured? And should Rome’s true ending be dated to 476, the Crusader sack of 1204, or the Ottoman conquest of 1453? #RomanEmpire #AncientRome #ByzantineEmpire #HistoryDocumentary #RomanHistory 00:00 Rome Did Not End in 476 01:20 Romulus and the Archaeology of Early Rome 02:45 Etruscan and Greek Influences 04:20 How the Republic Conquered Italy 05:45 Hannibal and the Second Punic War 07:30 How Victory Broke the Republic 09:15 Julius Caesar and Civil War 11:00 Augustus and the Hidden Monarchy 12:35 The Pax Romana and Its Cost 14:10 The Crisis of the Third Century 15:45 Diocletian Constantine and a New Rome 17:00 Why the Western Empire Fragmented 18:45 The Eastern Romans We Call Byzantine 20:25 The Crusader Sack of 1204 22:15 Constantinople Falls in 1453 23:40 What Survived Rome 25:40 When Did Rome Really Fall
