This luminous ghazal — listed as No. 40 in the Divan of Hafez — has at times been attributed to other poets as well, yet its spirit bears unmistakably the seal of Hafez. His voice rises here as the language of freedom and divine ecstasy. For Hafez, the tavern (meykadeh) is not merely a place of wine and revelry; it is the sanctuary where all veils are lifted and the soul stands face to face with the very essence of Love. In this sacred space, the Cupbearer (saqi) becomes the embodiment of mercy, and the wine — a radiant light distilled from Truth itself. This poem is a cry against the hypocrisy of the self-righteous — the pious judges and hollow preachers who worship appearance instead of meaning. With gratitude, Hafez proclaims that “the tavern’s door remains open” — a symbol that hope is still alive, that the path to salvation and forgiveness has not yet closed. In this “open door” lies liberation: freedom from the chains of deceit, from the fear of judgment, from the dryness of dogma. Hafez gives thanks that the door of the tavern — the door of divine grace — still stands ajar, for he knows that if it were ever shut, the hearts of lovers would perish in the suffocating air of hypocrisy and pretense. And then we read and hear: “My heart is slipping from my grasp — O wise ones, for God’s sake…” This cry is not the beginning of complaint, but an act of confession. The poet acknowledges that his heart is no longer his own — it has passed beyond his command and been entrusted to the Beloved. This surrender of the heart is, in truth, the surrender of being itself: the complete submission of the lover before the divine presence of Love. In this ghazal — the fifth poem in the Divan of Hafez — the poet’s language sways between reason and rapture. Reason warns, yet Love takes flight, fearless and free. Behind the words, one hears the voice of a soul that has crossed its own borders and drowned in the boundless sea of passion. Where he says, “At dawn, when the breeze recalls the scent of your hair,” the remembrance of the Beloved becomes the fragrance of liberation, and the morning wind, the herald of Her presence. This poem is the pure image of a human being who, through love, transcends the self and unites with the infinite essence of the Beloved. His heart, like a freed bird, escapes the cage of ego and possession. And in the end, Hafez speaks of annihilation (fanā) with such gentleness and humility that Love no longer seems a consuming fire — but a radiant light kindled within the lover’s heart, guiding him out of the darkness of his own being.
