Abstract: Generative AI systems have been increasingly used to produce music, text, art, and videos that approach the quality people can create. While these AI systems can enhance people's creative work, a widely voiced concern is that generative AI might replace human creative workers and pose significant ethical, legal, and social risks. In this talk, Professor Guo Freeman will introduce her multi-year research on generative AI’s evolving dual role as both a productivity-oriented tool and a source of social and emotional support in creative work such as game development and how this intertwining role is reshaping socially nuanced creative teams and workflows. She will also discuss future directions for designing generative AI and human-AI teaming that align with the collaborative values, group identities, and artistic aspirations of creative teams, which will empower rather than erode humans’ creative teamwork.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Guo Freeman is a Dean’s Associate Professor in Human-Centered Computing at Clemson University in the United States. At Clemson, she directs the Gaming and Mediated Experience Lab (CUGAME). Her work focuses on how interactive technologies such as multiplayer online games, live streaming, social VR, and generative AI shape interpersonal relationships and group behavior. She has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications and won 16 Best Paper or Honorable Mentions Awards. She has secured $30 million in external grant funding from the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the US Army, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and was awarded Clemson University College of Engineering, Computing, and Applied Sciences (CECAS) Junior Researcher of the Year in 2023.
