You know that four circle diagram with ikigai in the middle? The one about finding your perfect career where passion, skill, need and money all overlap? Turns out it was invented by a Spanish astrologer in 2011 and had nothing to do with Japan.
This video traces the real history of the word ikigai, starting with a Japanese psychiatrist named Mieko Kamiya who worked with leprosy patients in the 1950s. She discovered that people who had lost everything could still wake up with a sense that life mattered. Her book from 1966 is still read in Japan today, and her definition is way gentler than the career test version we know.
I also get into some fascinating research. In the Ohsaki study, over 40,000 Japanese adults were asked if they had ikigai in their lives. People who said no were roughly one and a half times more likely to die over the next seven years. But here's the kicker: only about a third of Japanese people say their work is their ikigai. Most find their reason for living somewhere else entirely.
What's one of your sources of ikigai? Drop it in the comments. And if you want to read more, Ken Mogi's book Awakening Your Ikigai is the closest to the original idea you'll find in English.
